CATS (Community Alternative Transition School)
Mission Statement
To educate, equip, and empower students to successfully re-enter a high school completion program.
CATS, or Community Alternative Transition School, is an educational program created through a partnership between the Kennewick School District and the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Court. Its purpose is to provide educational opportunities for students who are under the supervision of the Benton-Franklin Juvenile Court and who meet a specific set of qualifying standards.
In CATS, students receive basic academic instruction from highly qualified staff in math, reading, and writing. They also receive daily coaching in Personal and Social Responsibility (PSR), social skills and communication skills. Students can earn high school credit through computer-assisted instruction and successful participation in and completion of classroom activities.
Enrollment in CATS is limited to 15 students at a time. Students referred to the program are evaluated by probation staff, detention center staff and detention center school staff to determine appropriate placement. Informal interviews of referred students may be incorporated into the placement process.
Eligibility to participate in the CATS Program
- Student resides in Benton or Franklin county
- Student is 14, 15 or 16 years of age
- Student is not currently enrolled in school
- Student is under the supervision of a Benton-Franklin juvenile probation counselor
